TOC Images and Original Content

Introduction. In the previous blog, I created digital TOC mockups. In this blog, I am going to select potential TOC photos and edit them for my final TOC. I will also be explaining my thought process, and why I chose certain pictures. All the editing was done with Adobe Lightroom.

\The only edits made was cropping the images. This is to make them the right dimensions for the TOC page (8.5x11).

1. Open Adobe Lightroom

2. Click the Add Image button

3. Select "From Camera Roll"

4. Select an Image

5. Use the Squares in the Corners to Crop the Image

Original Photos.

This is the first image that I chose. I chose this image because it has hot air balloons, which relates to the cover. It is also the perfect time, there is not too much sunlight, and it is not too dark. This photo was originally taken with the though that this is a good view, as you can see the vast land, and the horizon. This is also in Turkey, so it connects back to the cover. When looking at the hot air balloon on the top left, it is also red, yellow, and white. These are the colors in the cover, so it is a good choice since it follows the same color scheme. This photo was originally going to be for the cover, but was not used because of the weird placement of balloons, which made elements such as the masthead and coverlines hard to place in accordance with travel magazines codes and conventions. This connects to an article that I can include in the magazine called "Activities in Turkey." It will be put covering one entire page since it is a convention of travel magazines to not introduce too many new ideas, and this image has the perfect amount of colors, not too much, and not too little. Using these, the original effect I wanted was to relate the image to the cover, and making the audience excited about the activities. When editing this image, I had to choose which parts I wanted to show. I decided to show some of the hot air balloon on the left for the colors, and show some of right side to show other hot air balloons and the vast land. This is to show the relation to the cover, and still have a good scene.

This is the second image that I chose. I took this image because of all the greenery in the background, The original effect I was going for is peace and tranquility to calm the reader and make them want to read my magazine, and persuade them to actually travel. I was not going to use this image for the cover since there is no space for any elements such as the masthead or coverlines. This image can connect to an article that reads "Sightseeing in Turkey." I like this image because of the vast forest in the background, along with the mountains behind it. Going through the heart, it shows that there is a lot to do in Turkey. If I were to use, I would either lay it back for the entire page, or on the page next to it to make a two-page spread. The colors are also nice since the colors green and brown pair well together, and really helps emphasize the feeling of peace and tranquility. This image does not connect to the cover much, but it is still a choice that I might decide to use for the TOC page. When editing this image, I had to choose between the top and the bottom. I chose the bottom so that the full heart can be seen. This is to emphasize that feeling of tranquility It was not a big crop, and was just small increments.

This is the third image that I chose. I originally took this image because of the nice scenery with the hot air balloons, nice sky, and the vast land. I was originally going for an effect of happiness and peace, and this image does just that. It also connects to the cover with the hot air balloons. This image was never going to be for the cover because of how far back the hot air balloons are. This image, just like the first image, can connect to an article called "Activities in Turkey," or "Hot Air Balloons in Turkey." When laying it down, it would take up an entire page, and maybe be next to another image to make a two-page spread. The colors also match since the yellow shade on the mountains on the back connect to the cover, and also looks good. this helps convey the feeling of happiness. This is a perfect image for the TOC since it leaves space to put text, is a nice scene, connects to the cover, and articles in the magazine. When editing this image, I had to choose between the top and the bottom, just like the second image. I chose to stay in the middle so that the land can be seen along with the sky. This is because it would be weird to have the sky, and no ground.

Section 2. Possible article titles I could use are "Activities in Turkey," "Sightseeing in Turkey," "A Tour of Italy," "Exploring Rome," "A Guide around Belgium," and "Best Locations for Water Sports." I chose these articles because they have to do with the coverlines, or travel. "Activities in Turkey," "Sightseeing in Turkey," "A Tour of Italy," and "Best Location for Water Sports" all relate to coverlines. "Exploring Rome" and "A Guide around Belgium" have to do with international travel, which relates to the masthead "World Travel." All these article titles also connect to travel magazines in general since the articles talk about different travel locations around the world. Page numbers I could use are 3, 5, 8, 12 14, and 18. This is because the actual magazine starts at page 3, and each article should take either 2 pages, or 4 pages depending on how big the article is. I will use article descriptors in my magazine. This is to give the audience a brief description of each section so that they know what to expect, and to make it easier for them to know what pages to turn to. When writing, I want to keep a persuasive and an optimistic tone. This will help my reader trust my magazine, and persuade them to read more. I will also try to write strong and stay factual so that the reader will trust the magazine even more, and they will want to travel. When creating the two page spread, I will use one of the articles that have to do with Turkey, such as "Sightseeing in Turkey" or "Activities in Turkey." This is because it is in the main coverline, and the cover image. The cover image and the main coverline is supposed to connect to an article inside the magazine as this is a convention of travel magazines. This helps to create a clear connection to from the cover to the TOC to the spread.

Conclusion. I am leaning more towards the last image. This is because it makes a clear connection to the cover and the contents inside the spread. The image also makes a connection to the main coverline, which helps to make a full circle throughout the magazine. An article I could write about is "Sightseeing in Turkey," or "Activities in Turkey" since these two help to complete that circle. Page numbers the I could use are 3, 5, 8, 12, 14, and 18 since it gives each article enough room. I will use descriptors in my TOC page to help the reader, and I will use an optimistic and persuasive tone to persuade the reader into reading more, and actually traveling.
